About Us
John Shelter, Founder of New Directions
New Directions is a non-adversarial and harm reduction approach to individuals or groups of individuals residing in illegal encampments, offering resources and opportunities, and educating the campers in ecological impact and appropriate environmental stewardship. These encampments frequently cause some measure of nuisance to the community, primarily by littering and ongoing debris piles, and of feces, urine, and other wastes deposited directly into the ground, and subsequently the groundwater, negatively affecting local ecologies as well as detracting from the visual appeal of the areas. Developed by social work staff and homeless individuals themselves who were Back to Basics participants, the program engages people where they are, addresses the issues of both ecological impact and offers resources to the campers.Â
