“Living in the southern Humboldt area, we have had an enormous boom in homeless camps around the outskirts of town and by the river. Our county is widespread and our resources here are extremely limited. There have always been challenges with garbage and fire risk in the homeless camps, and until recently, it was addressed by once-a-year round up of all the trash and sheriffs packing up all the camps only to have them return the very next day. The communication that John has with individuals is improving their outlook, giving them direction and education as well as assistance in hauling their trash on a schedule, so it doesn’t stack up. Also, showing proactive ways to keep things clean, cook stoves, hand washing stations, and simply lending a hand.

More than anything, he is saying ‘I see you.’ Simply acknowledging that they are a part of our community and that they are as important as anyone. Their life isn’t invisible. People do care and people want to know their story, maybe even help change their story. John has helped improve the living conditions in our area and given a brighter outlook to those who need it most.
